The NZ waste disposal levy, explained

If you run a commercial site, the waste levy is one line on your bill worth understanding — it's set by the government, it changes over time, and it's one of the few waste costs you can actively reduce. Here's how it works.

What is the waste levy?

The waste disposal levy is a charge the New Zealand government applies to material sent to disposal facilities such as landfills. It's charged per tonne, and the rate depends on the class of facility the waste goes to. The levy exists to reflect the cost of disposal to the environment and to fund waste-minimisation and resource-recovery initiatives.

Why it changes

The government reviews and adjusts levy rates over time, and they differ by landfill class — so a single fixed figure dates quickly. For the current, official rates, check the Ministry for the Environment's waste disposal levy rates rather than relying on a number quoted elsewhere.

How it shows up on your bill

With WasteLogic, applicable landfill disposal levies are passed through at cost, shown as a separate line — what we're charged, you're charged, with no mark-up. Because the levy applies to what's sent to landfill, the more you divert into recycling and recovery, the less of your waste attracts it.

How to reduce your levy exposure

  • Separate recyclable and recoverable material so it isn't sent to landfill
  • Keep recycling clean — contaminated loads can be downgraded to landfill
  • Right-size bins and frequency so you're not over-disposing
  • Use your monthly diversion report to see where landfill volume is coming from

FAQ

Waste levy — common questions

The levy is set nationally by the government, but the rate depends on the class of disposal facility the waste goes to. Current rates are published by the Ministry for the Environment.

No. Applicable landfill disposal levies are passed through at cost and shown as a separate line on your invoice.

Yes — the levy applies to what's sent to landfill, so diverting more into clean recycling and recovery reduces the volume that attracts it. Your monthly report shows where your landfill volume is coming from.
